before death

Something has gone wrong with your perfect life, and you don't know how to fix it. In fact, you're not even sure what it is that you're doing wrong.

It only seems like yesterday when you were working a boring shift at UCLA's Ackerman Student Union. You met Jason, one of your co-workers and also the kindest, sweetest guy to walk the earth, the man you were meant to marry and love for the rest of your life. You started dating, even though you knew that your father would disapprove. Jason just completely swept you off your feet!

After almost two wonderful years with him (ignoring the constant arguments with your father), Jason ended up dropping out of college to start a company with his friend, Richard Allen. It wasn't really unexpected, because Jason was always too smart for college anyway. He and Richard were always building the most amazing electronic gizmos and entering various student design contests. The professors only wanted to make him memorize formulas and do busywork problems; Jason was already succeeding on his own.

Of course, this made things even worse with your parents. They kept telling you that you were dating below your station and how his dropping out obviously proved his stereotypical American laziness. You knew they were wrong, and it hurt you deeply that they simply couldn't understand your love. You believed that Jason would succeed, and even if he didn't, you'd be happy staying with him. When he proposed to you, you knew that things would be difficult, but you already knew that you were meant to be together. You accepted, and your parents disowned you, as you had expected. Unable to afford college now, you dropped out, and you began taking odd jobs to help provide for your new husband. It was a tough life, and you had trouble waiting tables and filing papers for demanding bosses all day, but you never complained. In fact, you spent all your remaining time encouraging and comforting Jason as he came home exhausted, night after night. Strangely enough, those were some of your happiest days together, but better times were just around the corner.

Electrodyne Systems, the company that Richard and your husband had founded, finally took off. They began signing bigger contracts and developing all sorts of neat new gadgets, more than you could ever keep track of. Unfortunately, Richard and Jason started to disagree on the direction of the company. Your husband would tell you about all the money that Richard was wasting experimenting with random ideas at the company and how Richard was standing in the way of some of Electrodyne's biggest contracts. Fortunately, Jason managed to land a military contract, and the company kept growing. One day, Richard simply resigned, and you never heard from him again. Jason told you something about Richard moving out to Tahiti or some other tropical place.

In any case, things were going great, and money kept rolling in. Jason helped the company grow to become one of the biggest in its field, and the two of you moved to a beautiful house in one of San Diego's suburbs. You don't have to work at all, and the maids keep up the household, so you just spend your time throwing parties to entertain Jason's clients, supporting local community causes, and redecorating your house.

Unfortunately, you can tell that success is taking its toll on your husband. He has to stay at work late into the night, and he never seems able to relax, even during your most extravagant parties. You surprise him with special gifts that you order from overseas, and you have the cook prepare Jason's favorite meals, but you can tell that it isn't really helping. In fact, it almost seems that the harder you tried to keep him happy and stay out of his way, the more distant he becomes. You do your best not to disturb his busy schedule, but you can tell that he's still agitated all the time. You've suggested that the two of you take a vacation to help him relieve stress, but he only says that there's no way that the company could run without him.

Recently, you've been having tea with one of your neighbors, Sean Diaz-Lapham. Apparently, he works with computers and electronics, too, though he does most of his work from home. You should definitely talk to Jason about doing something similar. In any case, you met Sean through a Community Watch program that you decided to start a couple of months ago. Sean has been very thoughtful, occasionally keeping you company while Jason is off on a business trip. He even installed a security system to help you feel safer when you're at home alone. You don't know what you'd do if he weren't around to lift your spirits. Eventually, you tearfully confided in him about the situation at home with Jason. He helped calm you down, and after some thought, he suggested that you surprise your husband with a romantic trip.

As luck would have it, Jason announced a few days later that he was planning to attend a boring week-long electronics showcase in San Francisco. Sean was planning to attend the event as well, so you decided to book the same high-speed train as your husband to give him a happy surprise. During the day, you could go shopping, and you could help raise Jason's spirits in the evenings.

Well, the day has finally arrived, and things have gone pretty well to plan. At first Jason didn't hear you calling to him, but he was really happy when he finally noticed. After a big kiss, you introduced him to Sean again, since you're sure that Jason doesn't remember any of your neighbors, and Jason warmly thanked Sean for giving you the idea to surprise him. When the train began boarding, you introduced yourself to the passenger who had the seat next to your husband's, explaining the situation, and she very graciously agreed to trade seats with you. This woman, Megan something-or-other, seems very nice. Maybe she wouldn't mind keeping you company in San Francisco, if she's staying in the area, since both Sean and Jason will be busy at the electronics thingy.

In any case, you're really excited to be spending this extra time with your husband. Jason seems a little distracted by his work, but he says he's very excited to discuss all of your plans for the perfect week together. There's bicycling through Golden Gate Park, strolling down Fisherman's Wharf, taking ferries across the bay, exploring Chinatown, having romantic Italian dinners in North Beach... It seems like this week-long getaway was exactly what you and Jason needed. You're sure that things are looking better already!

after life

At the beginning of the game, you should be talking to Jason about all of the places the two of you might go once you reach San Francisco, just as any couple might do on their way to start a vacation. When one of the judges announces the explosion, (safely!) fling yourself out of your seat, scream, cry out to the Heavens, or go nuts, as appropriate. Don't go overboard, as pretty much everyone should be dead within a few moments. When you die, just lie still on the ground with your eyes closed until a judge announces the continuation of the game.

When you wake, you'll be frightened and confused by what's happened. Though you know it's kind of selfish, you'll be very glad that Jason is here with you, and you'll seek his comfort. He'll probably take charge and try to figure out what's going on. You'll do your best to help him out. You may also want to check on Sean and the other passengers to see how they're coping. Most of your possessions have disappeared, but at least you still have your wedding ring!

Compulsions:

Do whatever your husband wants. He always knows what to do in emergencies.

Check up on Jason every now and then. Make sure he knows that you're thinking of him, and make sure that nothing happens to him. You can't be left alone here!
