after life

The Believer

before death

"What if...?" You used to scoff at the words. These days however, the world seems less certain. Raised in a small, secluded community located at the edge of Death Valley, you were always taught that the outside world was full of corruption and temptation. You learned that entrance to heaven was gained through hardship and denial of excess. You realized the joys of simple living, shunned the extravagance and conveniences of the outside world and basked in the Lord's glory, free from outside influence.

As a young boy you used to help the local doctor in his tasks. You remember the times fondly. Medicine came naturally to you, and you developed a natural affinity for the healing arts. He was an old man however, and it was not long before the community would need a replacement. When he passed, you were sent to learn the skills that the community needed. It was difficult leaving home. You still remember your parents' faces as their only son left the security of the only world he'd ever known. Back then, the only certainty you had was that your faith would bring you back.

When you entered the nearby community college to gain the necessary prerequisites for a more established institution, and eventually medical school, you found there a wealth of information and ideas. You began to realize that all your life you had only experienced a shadow of all the possibilities available. There was so much to learn and to explore. There could be no harm in knowledge, could there? Your faith would keep you strong, wouldn't it?

You returned to the commune to bring your questions to the local Father from whom you had always sought guidance before. This time, he was unable to fill the void that you found growing in your heart. Inadequate to assuage your doubts, where once you saw a knowledgeable and sage leader, you now found a well-meaning but naïve fool. He obviously hadn't reached the inner circles of enlightenment yet. You would have to seek the advice of a higher council.

The commune Father suggested that you take your questions to the head Temple in northern California. This would require a high-speed train ride to San Francisco and then a long bus ride into the far-flung counties east of the Bay Area, where the Inner Circle resided in peace and harmony.

As you boarded the train, doubt still gnawed at your soul, but you knew that it was the Devil's doing. You prayed that this journey would answer all your questions and refill the void in your heart with the Lord's Truth.

after life

At the beginning of the game, feel free to talk to your neighbors, nap, read a book, or flip through a magazine, just as you might on a real train ride. When one of the judges announces the explosion, (safely!) fling yourself out of your seat, scream, cry out to the Heavens, or go nuts, as appropriate. Don't go overboard, as pretty much everyone should be dead within a few moments. When you die, just lie still on the ground with your eyes closed until a judge announces the continuation of the game.

When you wake, you'll be confused. Where are the Heavenly Hosts in their silver spaceships? Why isn't Jesus descending in his star cruiser to take you back among the Pure Ones? This is all wrong!

In fact, you'll get so agitated that you'll eventually start a conflict with someone who's offended you. While you won't strike a child like Kitty, almost anyone else is fair game, especially if he or she is obviously a sinner. If conflict begins, you'll get your one-time conflict bonus. Do this within a few minutes of waking up at an appropriately dramatic moment.

Regardless of the outcome, you'll be convinced that the weight of sin among the other passengers is weighing down your soul.

Compulsions:

Try to convince people to give up their sinning ways. It's obviously their fault that you're stuck here.
