California Highways

The California state highway shield consists of a spade-shaped green background with white lettering. This shape evolved from the days when California's highways were signed with a miner's spade and grizzly bear (appropriate for representing the 1849 Gold Rush). Eventually, the grizzly bear was eliminated but the spade shape was kept and adapted.
