What was the Marin Fruit Co.?
The Marin Fruit Co. was a small grocery store at 605 Bridgeway in the town of Sausalito, right along the town's
waterfront. It was owned by my relatives on my mother's side of the family until January 1998, when rising rents
in a town that now thrives on tourism forced it to close. While it was open, my grandmother would often work
there, along with my great aunt and uncle.
The store was at one time owned by my great grandfather, who bought it from the original owner. Just down the street
from the site is a park named after him for his generosity to residents of Sausalito during the Great Depression years.
Sausalito.net has a great page on the history of the Marin Fruit Co.
here.
These pictures were taken on a trip to the store in January 1998, shortly before it closed. The space not only held a
store, but also living space in the back of the building and upstairs, where some of my family members lived in the
pre World War II years.
