Emphasis is on principles of optical links, including channel capacity, basic limitations due to noise processes, and bit error rate requirements. Optical amplification, the detector-receiver, optical fiber and free-space propagation, the transmitter, and modulation schemes. Coherent and incoherent communications and network systems. Basic optical Fourier transform signal processing techniques. |
