BROOMBALL! +++++++++++++ Thaaat's right, the first broomball game of the semester is coming up THIS THURSDAY, and it's Alumni vs Non-Alumni. Come on down (or up?) to the Oakland Ice Center and [try to] school "us young'uns" in the ways of Old School Broomball. Here're the details: WHEN: Berkeley carpools assemble in the parking lot next to Bowles at 9:30pm. Game starts at 10:30pm, and goes through 11:30pm. WHERE: Oakland Ice Center (519 18th St in Oakland, but you knew that =>) WHO: YOU. Yea, I'm talkin to you. YOU are coming. RIDES: Assemble near Bowles for Berkeley-area rides. If you're in South Bay and planning to attend, email to sobay@hkn if you either need a ride or can give a ride. "No ride" is NOT an excuse, Byron ;-) The EJC broomball tourney, by the way, should be starting up reasonably soon; as always, alumni are welcome to and encouraged to come out and play for your favorite honor fraternity (and you know I'm not referring to that silly group that starts with a T and ends with a P). I should have the dates in time for the March newsletter, and they should be posted on the HKN calendar () by then as well. 2. Update on t-shirts/yearbooks and alumni portal +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ A number of people have inquired regarding the status of the t-shirt/yearbook mailings that apparently are backlogged well into early 2001. Yes, I still have the list, and yes, I fully intend on cleaning up the backlog Some Time Real Soon Now (in particular, once the t-shirts are restocked). When I mail yours out, I will send you an email directly to confirm it has been mailed. Portal, as promised in the last newsletter, seems to be a popular enough idea, so it will indeed happen, soon. Still in vaporware mode for time being though. 3. Request for comments: South Bay picnic-potluck? ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ A number of you mentioned at the Alumni Appreciation Dinner that it's too much of a pain to drive up to the Berkeley area for events. So, suppose I were to: - pick a date, say Sunday, March 31 - ...and a park somewhere in South Bay (probably in the Saratoga area unless told otherwise) - ...and to declare that there will be a potluck-picnic-bbq type event there that day Note that I use "potluck" in the traditional sense of the word, as in all people attending are expected to bring something to share (as opposed to the usual HKN definition which exempts candidates). Target group would obviously be south bay alumni, but the event would be broadcast out to current members/officers as well, quite a few of whom should probably be able to attend considering that they're likely to be home for spring break (hence the choice of date). Note also that this is _not_ meant to replace the traditional "semi-required" potluck and picnic (now Scavenger Hunt) for candidates. While this'll probably be listed as a fun event (and will most likely feature activities similar to a classical HKN picnic -- frisbee/football/whatnot), it will be separate from those two and will not have special status for candidates. I can set up the nifty HKN Potluck Script to gather who-is-bringing-what information, and take care of any other administrativia that may come up (there shouldn't be much of it). However, as with any potluck, it'll be up to you guys to make this happen. So, if you think you're interested, LET ME KNOW. If there's sufficient interest, I'll finalize the details and announce them in the March newsletter. 4. Homework +++++++++++ Not that I'm in any position to assign homework, but ah well =) Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is -- find a random sample of 5-10 people at your grad school / place of employment / retirement community / wherever you spent most of your weekdays, of _any_ age, who got an undergrad EE/ECE/EECE/EECS degree at a U.S. institution. Then inquire whether they are an HKN member. Report results back to me. Yes, if you work in an unrelated sector (law, medicine, etc), you're exempt (although still welcome to try). Why? Well, there's a lot of talk going around our chapter about outreaching to other chapters, alumni, etc; it would be nice to have at least some numbers on who is around. And, who knows, maybe your newly-found HKN bond will make you a new friend =) 5. Upcoming HKN events ++++++++++++++++++++++ Ripped straight from the HKN calendar for those of you who'd rather have this directly in your mailbox: Feb 20 - Candidate Meeting Feb 21 - ALUMNI BROOMBALL (see above) Feb 23 - HKN-TBP basketball game Feb 26 - Bowling Mar 2 - Photo Scavenger Hunt (An HKN Picnic For The New Millennium) Mar 8 - Mini-Golf 6. Easter egg hunt results, round 1 +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ And the winner is... Lorentz Shyu, who discovered the easter egg about 4 minutes after the newsletter went out. A large number of other people discovered the egg soon thereafter, as well. The egg was prominently displayed in the signature -- "Respectfully Ctrl-Eed" was Greg Chew's (class of '99) trademark sig back when he was an RSec. Greg himself came in 9th =) In case you missed it, "easter eggs" are snippets inserted in the newsletter which mimick or quote an old HKN'er. Are there a new eggs in this edition? You'll just have to wonder, eh? Email me if you find one. -- Alex Fabrikant alexf@hkn.berkeley.edu HKN Alumni Relations Spring '02 [distribution: officers, alumni]
