    		7:30PM - GM2

1. Faculty Retreat + Department Service (Ellen)
---------------------------------------------
Faculty Retreat:
. Erik and Ellen persuaded the staff to support student society
  presentation at the retreat.
. Encourage people to come to faculty retreat meeting.
. There will be an e-mail with the meeting minutes, read this to stay in
  the loop

Department Service
. Baking on the Tuesday we come back @ Grace's - there will be ~20
  candidates.
. Tours on Cal Day
. There will be 3 or 4 dept service activities.

Also, please invite your profs to the faculty mixer!!

2. Candidate Stuff (Amy)
------------------------
. Amy can't be present at the Potluck due to a grad school visit. She
will be visiting Purdue and sizing up our competition.
. Please interact with the candidates so that they won't feel awkward and
left out without Amy. Especially the shy, wallflower candidates.
. At GM2, Amy would like to go over the very subjective 'moral
character' requirement of an HKN member. Be prepared to talk to candidates
  about this if they ask.
. Any concerns about candidate matters should be discussed with Amy ASAP.
It's important that we talk about this before the end of the semester.

3. Extra Indrel Officer for Fall? (Hua)
---------------------------------------
. Indrel is considering having another career fair in the fall.
. Also, fall has traditionally been a heavy infosession season.
Therefore, four may not be enough to cover all the bases.
. Indrel is thinking of splitting up Indrel into two subcommittees:
one to handle career fair, and the other to handle infosessions.

  pros:
	. more manpower
. can split up the work more
. one person is not enough to handle infosessions, and two people
are not enough to handle jobfair (so we need to add another officer)
  cons:
. need more communication and management
. is it a waste of manpower after jobfair? What will they do?
Also, may want to push back the jobfair some more to the sixth
           week or so.

. most of jobfair planning happens during the summer, so it will
definitely help to have five people, at least over the summer.
. even though the work is doable for four people, it's a lot to ask of
each officer, especially with continuous deadlines throughout the
  summer.

--> It will be viable to try it once time and see what happens.
Nearly unanimous unofficial vote to try it for a semester.

3.5 Apple Site Visit (Joyce)
----------------------------
Site visit will be on Wednesday, March 31st.

What kind of stuff would people be interested in?
     . itunes
. less marketing would be nice
. aesthetic designs of their products

Please email more ideas to joyce by tonight. Well, too late.

Need drivers.
Maybes: chan, ttd, hua, atsao, shihua

4. Assignments for Event Reports (Cedric)
-----------------------------------------
The reports should be put online, and to take better notes, someone will
have a printed copy at each event to fill out on the spot. For the time
being, please turn it into the RSec, who will transcribe it and put it
online.

4.5 Exam Checkout Procedures (Exam Files)
-----------------------------------------
* Keep both the checkout card and the checkout slip!
* File them and the deposit ($5 each exam, up to 3 - we don't make
  change) under their LAST NAME!
* Upon returning the exams:
Discard the checkout slip, and return the checkout card with their
  deposit.
* Return the exam in the appropriate folder in the appropriate filing cabinet.

5. Grad Student Q&A (Mimi)
--------------------------
UPE invites CS grad students to talk about grad schools each semester, and
offer their experiences about grad school.

EEGSA is interested in sponsoring that with us, and are willing to provide
for food and stuff.

Sheila Humphreys suggested that this could be done as part of the "How to
Get Into Grad School" program.

Deptrel and Tutoring will work together to get the groundwork done for this.

6. Advisor Change (Mimi)
------------------------
Prof. Ross will be returning to finish her studies, so we need a new
advisor. We will lookup minutes from last semester's discussion for
professors to ask.

7. Midsemester Meetings (Mimi)
------------------------------
Mimi is thinking about doing 1-1 meetings with each officer to discuss how
HKN is going for you.

She would like opinions on how HKN can be better, candidate issues, your
issues, and everything that's fit to spend her gift of gab on. It will
take place after spring break.

8. Closing Thoughts (Mimi)
--------------------------
. Mimi's impressed with all the initiative that people have been taking
this semester (and so am I)!
. She would like us to keep up the energy for the rest of the semester.
. One thing: officers should go to more activities! Please try to make
  time for more activities.

 Fun Stuff
===========

Here is an article that I read on BBSpot, America's most trusted news
source (ok not really), a few years ago. I came across it again and was
amused - hopefully, it will amuse you too.

source: http://bbspot.com/News/2000/5/clock_rift.html

Overclocker Creates Rift in Space-Time Continuum
------------------------------------------------

Santa Cruz, CA - A rift in the space-time continuum was created today when
overclocker Jamie Aperman ran a 750 MHz Coppermine Pentium III at 1.6 GHz.
Overclocking has long been blamed for causing global warming, but this is
the first occasion that the fabric of space-time has been damaged. MIT
Professor George Greznowski said, "It appears that the CPU was operating
so fast that it began to execute instructions before they arrived. This
execution of future instructions created a small tear in the fabric of
space-time itself through which part of the motherboard passed into a
parallel universe."

No one was injured in the accident, but a computer motherboard was
partially damaged. Mr. Aperman better known as SpeedPhreeek said, "I'm
pissed. I lost a brand new Alpha Cooler and Coppermine to a parallel
universe. I called my insurance company and they don't cover losses to
rifts in the space-time continuum."

Intel researchers have long warned of such damage to the space-time
continuum, and added clock multiplier locks to their CPUs before they were
required by Congress. A bill is now in the US Senate which would require
a three day waiting period for purchasers of Alpha Cooling Fans and
Peltier cooling devices. The bill would also require clock multiplier
locks on all new processors.

Overclocking advocate Horace Spencer said, "This bill before Congress
won't prevent overclocking. They'll just create a black market for
non-locked processors. Most of the top overclockers already get their
goods from Taiwan."
