To be worthy of membership in our Very Secret Society (TM), you must...
. go to Miniature Golf and mingle with candidates. Do not abuse putters.
. participate in the Scavenger Hunt on Saturday.
. submit two of your candidates' profiles.
. spray down the next open-top convertible you see with a garden hose,
like Geoff's!!
. not notice that these minutes were sent out horribly, so horribly late.
Only after you complete these five trials may you be considered for
membership in our Very Secret Society so that you may partake in our
weekly Secret Barbequeues held at our Very Secret Location at a Very
Secret Time every Sunday in the Volleyball courts behind Soda at noon.

0. Special Announcement (Mimi)
------------------------------
We won the award for BESTHKNCHAPTERINTHEWHOLEWIDEWORLD! Okay not in
those exact words, but that's pretty much what it is. So props to all
the officers who made this happen, and big-ups to Bridge for putting
together a great annual report.
1. Props + 2 Birthdays + Places to Go (Mimi)
--------------------------------------------
Ellen - For working really really really hard pulling together all the
DeptRel stuff (GM Speakers, faculty retreat, faculty interviews,
etc)
Eric - for his work on the huge EJC budget report, paying attention to
each minute detail from every event.
Kun and Rupert's birthdays are this week! Thanks once again for all
your contribution, guys.

2. facretreat@hkn (Ellen)
-------------------------
Every spring semester, the faculty get together to talk about issues
regarding teaching, research, and interacting with students, among other
things. Student societies have traditionally had a chance to make a
presentation during the faculty retreats.
Currently, the e-mails regarding inter-society discussion about faculty
retreat go to facretreat@hkn.
Instead of having an opt-out list for all current officers, it will be
an opt-in list for people who would be interested in helping out. If
you'd like to opt in, tell Ellen. People who attend the meetings will
likely send out a summary to officers as events come up.
3. Freshmen Info Page (Ellen)
-----------------------------
Please visit the website for prospective students and give feedback:
http://hkn.eecs.berkeley.edu/student/
Volunteers to give opinions and help out:
kun, ttd, cling, geoffcm, mimi, chan, dhsu
Daniel will write about his AWESOME experiences to be put up on the
page. This is his way of giving back to the College that's given so
much to him. If we all pitch in a little, maybe ten years down the
road, we will meet a student from Berkeley EECS and hear that s/he's
having the same positive experiences that we've had.
Discussion about hosting a panel in GM3:
Originally, Professor Ross was either coming to speak, or was going to
find someone to speak. Ellen found an interesting candidate for a
speaker in GM3; a Berkeley EECS grad who is now a photographer.
Inspired by this, Ellen is thinking of getting together a panel of
people who were EECS but have moved on to do other things to speak at
GM3.
Pros:
Good break from pure EECS-related talks
May be good as a non-GM activity
Microsoft's Alumni Chat format would work well.
Cons:
Concerns about the format of the panel
- How will it be moderated?
- Will the questions be any good?
- Panels we've had were not very successful
- Doesn't have to be a panel, but one person. -> Variety is better
though.
- Need to consider providing for everyone attending.
- Would it be impolite to Professor Ross? -> She would speak at our
banquet instead.
More discussion pending.
4. E-Week + EJC (Kevin & Rupert)
--------------------------------
What do we want to do for E-Week?
Will do a dunk-tank (make sure to contact profs before reserving the
tank). Downside of this is that it's not too related to engineering...
- This would be better for the last day (friday)
- We need to contact professors.
We also want cool stuff to show off during E-Week (and perhaps Cal Day).
If you have any interesting things to show off, contact ejc@hkn.
BBQ: since we're doing so much other stuff that week, we'll pass on
manning the bbq.
Misha's running for ASUC president: e-mail him if anyone's interested in
running for senate and want advice.
Show your support for engineers running for office in the ASUC!!
But make sure you agree with the person's views...
Societies are not allowed to officially endorse any candidate, but
individuals are welcome to show support.
Have ejc-reps mail members@hkn and let them know what's up
5. Company Visits (Casey and Vu)
--------------------------------
Indrel will focus on building relationships for the rest of the
semester.
Company visits (HP, NVidia, Apple, AMD) - will publicize to general
eecs students (20~30 students for each trip)
Perhaps Pixar too.
Schedule:
4/2 - Apple
4/26 or 28 - HP
4/16 - AMD
Submit your resumes for the resume book!
I don't have ADD...
6. Research-related Services (Mimi)
-----------------------------------
Sheila asked Mimi what HKN does to foster research interest...
suggested that we do more to this end, since we "have the resources"
to foster more interest. Some candidate also brought this up.
Ways to reach this goal:
. A message board about research where people can discuss various
issues.
. We should emphasize that it's important for students to actively seek
research themselves, rather than rely on openings to show up.
. Other chapters have "research advisor officers," but their roles are
unclear.
. Our advice would be pretty static, so there may not be too much we can
do...
. Sheila would want to focus on the things that distinguish your society
from other societies.
. Thought that it was a good idea that UPE has "reading groups"
- effectiveness of reading groups questionable; perhaps better for us
to have an informal talk by students in research in the beginning of
the semester and act as a liaison between profs and students.
. Web pages would this be redundant, with pages from URO and URAP
. other ways to get students involved with professors' research: improve
faculty-student mixer, poll professors about what they want from
undergrads in terms of research assistance.
7. Morning calls for scavhunt...
--------------------------------
chan requested it. Please go and have fun! And food!!
8. Bridge (kun)
---------------
Bridge is planning a new website
- need more info on candidates, so committee heads should write
about a half-page on two of your candidates.
- this is so that we can get to know our candidates better.
