Details

0. Guest
--------
Special guest of the night was Jessica Lii, the former HKN president when
yours truly (and a bunch of other officers) was but a candidate trying to
complete his challenges.
1. Retreat reimbursements
-------------------------
Fill out a reimbursement form and leave it in the treasurer box in the
Cory office. Reimbursements are for gas only. Don't even think about
getting reimbursed for all those delicious marshmallows we ate at the
awesome bonfire.
2. Indrel Updates
-----------------
Mad Props Disease to IndRel for their unrelenting work on the phone. There
are currently a whopping 14 confirmed companies for the jobfair (to be
held on 2/12). Officers (and active members) should sign up for timeslots
to help out on the day of the jobfair. Sign up for whatever timeslots are
good for you, not just the ones you want. Most people needed for 8-10
and 4-5 timeslots.
"You will be fed." -Vu
Indrel ordered 20 white Polo shirts with Eta Kappa Nu on it. We can reuse
it later. On the day of the jobfair, show up 10-15 minutes early to
change into the shirt - wear an undershirt, please. No armpit surprises!
Volunteers will be placed in one of the parking lot, registration table,
or in-fair locations. Hua will assign tasks for you.
Pub/IndRel need help flyering and planning an afterparty for companies,
and possibly an after-afterparty (assuming we can clean up in time). The
after-afterparty can (and perhaps should) be held elsewhere.
3. Alumni Appreciation Dinner (AlumRel - Wonsop, aka Drew)
----------------------------------------------------------
AAD will most likely be on next wednesday or the wednesday after that, but
it depends on alumni availability. Please RSVP when the e-mail is sent
out. It will most likely be at TGIFridays, considering their large room
and reasonable menu.
3.5. Alumnae Appreciation Dinner (AlexF)
----------------------------------------
There will be (and there was) dinner after this meeting in honor of
alumnae (jalii). We had a pseudo-birthday ice cream cake for her and
everything. It was held at Claim Jumper, where AlexF received a
'Harmless' rating on the "Measure Your Sexual Appeal!" machine. Wonsop
was rated 'Poor fish.' Myself, I was rated 'Hot Stuff' on a previous
occasion. Need I say more?
4. Cardkeys (Rsec)
------------------
If your cardkey doesn't work, let me know. Will I do something about it?
Perhaps. On an unrelated note, please submit a Hard Core EECS Beanie
sample if you have one. This semester will be the semester beanies
return!
5. EJC Meeting briefing
-----------------------
Matt Lowry, the EJC President, wants to make EJC more active, fostering more
interaction between societies and departments.
Financial Committee - Eric Roller (attend treasurer's meeting tomorrow
5PM, 120 Bechtel)
High School Outreach - Kevin Wang
Constitution Comm - Rupert Chen
The EJC Ski Trip is next Saturday at 5AM. Meet at HMC, come back on the
same night. If you're interested, it's $40 (transportation + lift
ticket), rentals separate. Send an e-mail to ejcski@hotmail.com for info
and to sign up.
Should EJC Announcements go to members? EJC Reps should be judicious. BE
JUDICIOUS! That's the key phrase for this semester.
6. Mission Statement
--------------------
Mimi went to OSL to look up our mission statement:
"EECS honor society that provides tutoring, peer advising, corporate
infosessions and blah blah blah." What the heck?
We need one that provides a guideline that describes what we want to
achieve. That is, it should be relatively stable, even though our
services may change over time.
A very rough suggestion:
- "HKN is an EECS Honor Society that aims to establish a positive
atmosphere for all students to interact."
Submit ideas by the end of the week, so we can revise. Mimi will try to
merge and we'll discuss further in the future.
7. New Projects / Collective priorities
---------------------------------------
It would be good to have more awareness of what's going on outside of your
own committee, so that we can help each other. Like that one time Connie
totally had some other person do her publicity work for her. Well, not
really, but we'd like to help each other, you know?
We need to establish priorities on what changes we want to push forward
with this semester:
- Buddy system between Candidates and Officers.
- More involvement w/ EJC: Mimi suggested to Matt Lowry that he provide
some time for societies to mingle after EJC Meeting
- Jobfair
- Online forum (a place for members to mingle and discuss issues)
- ILP Relations (Dept wants us not to host non-ILP infosessions. We want
to get a policy set in stone, if possible)
- Video Time Capsule (procure a camera, possibly subsidized by EJC?)
8. Speakers for GM
------------------
Suggestions:
- Mike Phipps from Altera - ask former indrel for contact
- Allistair Black (HKN alum, Founder of Gadzoox)
- Prof. Ross
- byu
- Prof. Papadmitriou
- also poll members@hkn for suggestions
- That Claim Jumper waiter that was really cool
Feel free to tell ellen more suggestions (deptrel@hkn)
9. Movies for Movie night
-------------------------
My Sassy Girl (2) - a romantic comedy about a guy and his sassy
girlfriend. They get back together in the end.
Bend it like Beckham (14) - A story of a girl who overcomes cultural
barriers to play soccer. They get back
together in the end.
Whale Rider (10) - A girl wants to inherit the leadership of an
aboriginal tribe. They get back together in
the end.
I am Sam (10) - A mentally handicapped man wants custody of
her daughter. They get back together in the end.
Spellbound (19) - A comedy about the national spelling bee.
They get back together in the end.
enCHANting Keira (1) - A story about Cedric and Keira Knightly. They
get back together in the end.
To Cedric's chagrin, it was decided that Spellbound would be the movie to
watch.
10. Exam Checkouts / Donations
------------------------------
Check out exams from the cabinet near the door in the Cory office, not the
Master drawer (Don't touch the masters!!). Checkout slips should be in
both offices now. Donate paper exams next week.
11. Unix Tutorial
-----------------
Geoffcm gave a unix tutorial. We are all GURUs now!
Sending files to people? Put it on an accessible location on HKN and
email out the location to people - don't send as attachments. Use space
judiciously. BE JUDICIOUS!!
commands you should know:
ls -> LiSt files
pwd -> Path of Working Directory
cd -> Change Directory
~ -> home directory
~geoffcm -> geoffcm's home directory
cp -> CoPy
mv -> MoVe
rm -> kaRl's favorite comMand. ReMoves permanently!
rm -r -> recursive removal
rmdir -> ReMove DIRectory
less is more (read text files)
more is less
emacs != iMac != IMAX
emacs -nw -> for console
grep word file -> search file for word (regular expressions are useful)
pine -> email and newsreader program. But you all should have known
already.
Ask Ops if you have any questions.
~/.forward - forward to each e-mail address in the list inside file

Fun Stuff
===========
Sorry, this week the RSec was too engrossed in a gaming phenomenon called
Gunbound, and could not come up with anything to amuse you. So in a
last-ditch effort to keep you entertained, here are some inspirational
quotes from random Korean Stationery I found on the web. The people who
make these things need to learn better Engrish.
"During my vagabond years, the yearning of you will serve as my
resthouse." (this one's actually pretty touching.)
"I want it so much till it sail in my mind. I never felt before the way
you make me fell being with you." (That second sentence... what?)
"We got tog ether to turnfrom around say you for the things nobody found."
(no comment)
And my favorite, from a letterhead I received one day:
"My old dreams are blowing in my wind."
